Nekyia (Nέκυια) is an immersive project that takes a synaesthetic approach to body performance by working with sound as a physical force.

Wearable sensors create an audiovisual feedback ecosystem to extrapolate sound and visuals from the pure, raw body-instinct. Nekyia draws on ancient Greek practices of spirit and dead ancestor communication, including the use of glossolalia or speaking in tongues and is informed by the dance practice of Butoh.

The performer takes a deep dive inward to access the shadow-realms of the subconscious through a ritualistic possession, allowing energies lurking within to take over and come through the body, giving them a voice and allowing pure intention and emotion to manifest beyond language and time.

Central to Nekyia is the exploration of the voice, as it interweaves with generative sounds, alternating between grace and violence, all of it modulated in real-time. Alice Karveli is the body and voice possessed, while Scald holds and manipulates the sonic space. --
